Now that Labor Day has arrived, you know what that means. No, not the death of your white pants, it’s back to school!
With busy schedules, after school activities and picky eaters, going back to a daily schedule may be a challenge when it comes to lunch for your little ones. Planning ahead can help busy moms. Prep your kids’ meals the night before. This way you won’t find yourself scrambling in the morning and sacrificing your kids’ nutrition with the wrong foods.
Growing children need protein, carbohydrates and fats along with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients more than anyone. A healthy lunch will help to keep their bodies and minds vital for a new school year.
The bento box style lunch is a popular option lately. It’s as easy as buying a pre-separated plastic container with room for all five food groups. Make sure the box is fun and colorful since you eat with your eyes first.
Fill the box with good food you know your kids like. Since you won’t be there to monitor them it will be much easier for them to get proper nutrition when you give them items they will actually eat:
- Turkey roll ups with whole wheat tortillas, deli turkey, tomato, lettuce, and honey mustard
- Fruit kebabs with toothpicks and a variety of different berries and melons
- Carrot sticks with a spoonful of reduced fat ranch dressing
- Greek yogurt sweetened with honey and almonds for dessert
Don’t forget to add a note reminding your child that you love them …and to eat their vegetables, of course.
